Who I’ve helped

Thousands of people, more than forty countries, one question underneath all of it.

Who will you be when what has long felt familiar is crumbling beneath your feet?

Boardrooms and hospital corridors, classrooms and kitchen tables. The work changes shape depending on who is in it. What stays the same is that somebody needed a witness before they could think clearly.

Story snippets

Seven pieces of work, up close.

What each group arrived with, what we actually did, and what changed.

3M

Healthcare · Design thinking

They came to reinvent medical tape. We spent the discovery watching instead: twenty-eight hospital departments, then a veterinarian, a special effects makeup artist, and a center that rehabilitates birds of prey. Nurses everywhere were cutting tape into shapes it was never made for, because it came in one size and they needed twenty. So the question moved from how do we improve tape to how do we help a clinician secure anything to a body without hurting it. The second question opens a product line the first one cannot reach. Their leadership changed what they were building, near term and long.

Healthcare · Facilitation · Culture

More than a hundred projects and workshops over three years, scoped, designed, facilitated, and written up while they were still warm. The one I think about was a transplant team on twenty-four hour call, the least available people in the building. They kept showing up, stayed in the disagreement, put their egos down, and built something they were proud of. To change a system you have to transform consciousness. The quality of each person’s interior condition has an outsized effect on what gets made.

MIT xPRO

Education · Facilitation · Product design

Cohorts of technology leaders from more than thirty countries, meeting live on critical thinking, systems thinking, emerging technology, and how to lead when the ground keeps moving. The design decision that makes it work is a subtraction. I talk for about a fifth of the time. The rest belongs to them, because the answers to their hardest problems are usually sitting in the session already, held by someone nobody has asked yet.

Capgemini

Technology · Coaching

A senior sales director with a growth target and a team that had heard every framework before. We worked one to one, less on the method than on how she carried it: what to say first, what to stop defending, where to slow down when the instinct was to push. She brought her people the approach in her own voice instead of mine. That is the only version that survives contact with a real team.

Deutsche Bank

Finance · Legacy · Memoir

Epic Ordinary does life story work with the bank’s clients. These are people who have spent decades building something to hand down, and the money transfers cleanly while the life behind it does not transfer at all. So we sit with them, ask the questions nobody has asked, and write the story down properly. What the heirs inherit then is the reason any of it was built in the first place.

NFL

Sports · Strategy · Training

A series of workshops over a month on diversity, equity, and inclusion, half of it strategy development and half of it training. The sort of subject people arrive braced for, so we slowed the pace, gave the first half hour to actual lives rather than policy, and let people be more specific than the topic usually allows. Strategy written by people who have stopped performing holds up after everyone goes home.

Viji

Memoir · One to one coaching

She had been circling a name her whole life. Her parents braided it out of their own, four small letters she kept folded away like a coat she was not sure she would ever grow into. An hour of being asked about it, and then more hours, and the coat turned out to fit. She works as a death doula, walking other people into the dark for what the daylight will not give them. The story on the page is her doing that for herself, in plain sight of her three daughters. She goes by Viji now.

Jordan is what I'd call a deep listener. It's not simply about giving others time to speak, but a quality of deep attention, and then the ability to respond with depth, feeling and wisdom.

Half an hour, unhurried.

You tell me where you are and what you are up against. I tell you how I would work with it. Bring something specific if you can. A decision you keep circling. A transition you are in the middle of. A question about where AI belongs in your work.
